Ben Sellers Capstone

My first move was to read the book Mere Christianity. I started the book briefly in the winter of 2015. Although, I totally forgot about the book during the Junior Thesis bedlam. Since my life has calmed down noticeably since then, I still have not finished the book. I really think that making my first move finishing the book will motivate me to do so. I love the author, C.S. Lewis and what I did read in Mere Christianity I fell in love with. This move was not only be beneficial in English for my capstone, but in my comparative religion class as well. I am hoping that as I read and research christianity more, I become able to draw parallels between my nonfiction summer reading choice, A Brief History Of Time and C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity.

First Move

Second Move

Reading Mere Christianity and thinking about religion and where I stand on the topic got me thinking about my upbringing in the quaker faith. During this time I was in comparative religions class, so this interest came at an ideal moment. We were assigned a project to go to a service for a religion that we had not had much experience with. My friends have always known my family was quaker and did not hold back on the quaker oatmeal jokes throughout middle school, and embarrassingly for them, high school. Eventually they asked me to take them to quaker meeting. So, a few friends and I went back to the meeting house where my family used to go every sunday, when I was to young to have a say. What I experienced there was really special

Into the Library

Starting in the beginning of the year, I have been devoting my free time to reading books about the wonders of the natural world, conservation, activism, sustainable business, anthropology, and all of the additional information that come with that topic. I recently decided to change the scope of my Capstone from the astronomy to the environment. To me, the two go have many similarities, like their endless expanse and the mystery that surrounds them.

The Wild

For the final step of my capstone I tried to embody the ideals of my favorite characters from the books I read as a part of my previous move. This journey took me to Cliffside Park. For two days I rode my bike to the park with all of my gear on my back. Along the way I faced both extreme sucesses and failures. I have included my journal entries from the time I spent in the out of doors.
